McDonald’s Unveils New Happy Meal Toys for Pokémon

McDonald’s Japan has unveiled its latest Pokémon-themed Happy Meal toys, set to hit stores on February 9, 2024. The announcement was made on McDonald’s Japan X (formerly Twitter) account.

The first set of toys includes tags for Pokémon Mezastar, a game where players can use physical tags to capture and collect Pokémon. The tags are for Pokémon Mezastar, containing players’ Pokémon, and players can earn extra tags for each subsequent Pokémon capture. Among the six variations of collectible Pokémon included in McDonald’s Happy Meals are Terastallized versions of Koraidon and Miraidon. It’s worth noting that Pokémon Mezastar is an arcade game limited to Japan.

The second type of Pokémon Happy Meal toy is expected to feature several Pokémon, including popular characters like Pikachu and Espurr. McDonald’s teased this collection last month, showcasing various Pokémon standing in a house. Fans can also anticipate obtaining Pichu, Scorbunny, and Rowlet. This toy series, named Pokémon Peaceful Place, will launch alongside the Pokémon Mezastar tags on February 9 and will include stickers and coloring books featuring fan-favorite Pokémon and regular household items.

The collaboration between The Pokémon Company and McDonald’s started in 2022, providing trainers with a unique way to engage with their favorite Pokémon. The Pokémon Happy Meal and the introduction of Match Battles for the trading card game were recent developments at the time. The Pokémon franchise, which began in 1996, has since expanded into various forms of entertainment media, including the release of Pokémon: Scarlet and Violet later that year.

In addition to the Happy Meal toys, The Pokémon Company has recently released the Scarlet & Violet — Paldean Fates expansion for the Pokémon Trading Card Game. This expansion draws inspiration from previous successful expansions, Hidden Fates and Shining Fates, and features Pokémon from the Paldea region. Shiny Pokémon make a return in this expansion, with over 130 Shiny Pokémon to collect and battle, including fan-favorites like Shiny Pikachu, Shiny Ceruledge, Shiny Tinkaton, Shiny Dondozo, and Shiny Tatsugiri. The Scarlet & Violet — Paldean Fates expansion also introduces Shiny Tera Pokémon-ex, featuring Charizard ex, Forretress ex, Espathra ex, and more Ancient and Future Pokémon-ex. Some Shiny Pokémon will be presented in full-art styles, providing a new perspective on these beloved characters. Select Pokémon ex will appear on hyper-rare cards, showcasing a unique raised foil effect.

Starting February 9, 2024, McDonald‘s Japan will be distributing the Pokémon Happy Meal exclusive Pokémon Mezastar tags and Pokémon Peaceful Place stickers and coloring books.
